Physical Healing

In Luke 4:18-19 Jesus said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.”

Another part of the ministry of Jesus is to heal the blind and every physical disability or disease. Psalm 103:1-3 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities [sins]; who healeth all thy diseases.” It is the desire of Jesus to forgive all our sins and to heal all of our diseases, not just some of them.

The Bible contains many testimonies and examples of the healing power of Jesus. This website also contains many testimonies of those whom Jesus has healed, including myself. It is very important to remember that Jesus is not a respector of persons. This means that He will treat everyone of us the same. Scripture teaches that "If ye have respect of persons, ye commit sin" (James 2:9). If God ever showed any degree of partiality or injustice He would be guilty of sin and God cannot sin. Therefore, if He has ever healed one then it must be His will to heal all.

But we must remember that God does not always get His will. We are free moral agents. We have a free will to do as we choose. Unfortunately, most of the time, we choose to disobey God. In our disobedience we will reap the fruit of our choices. Proverbs 1:28-31 says, “Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: for that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear [to reverence or obey] of the Lord: they would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.”

Deuteronomy 28 says the same thing in different words. The first fourteen verses list many blessings that are found in obedience to the Lord. Verse 15 says, “But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments and his statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.” The balance of the chapter lists every disease and calamity known to man as the fruit of disobedience to God.

This is also a New Testament or New Covenant principle. Galatians 6:7-8 says, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”

The principle of reaping and sowing is the foundation of this life. It also defines our relationship with God. He is always just and fair. He will always reward us with His benefits, if we obey Him. In His love for us he has also told us what will happen in our disobedience. In our disobedience we have given the devil a legal right or place (Eph. 4:27) in us that will result in a negative consequence of some kind in our lives.

There are many other passages that connect sin and disease. In Mark 2:9 Jesus asked, “Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?” James 5:16 says, “Confess your faults [sins] one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

Please read the section on the Spiritual Roots of Disease for more information on this topic. My book, In His Own Image quotes over 200 clinical trials and/or medical text books that also demonstrate the connection between negative emotions (sin) and disease.
